LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man was shot Friday on Interstate 65 near Henryville, Indiana, after a road rage incident.
Indiana State Police said just after 2 p.m., a Chrysler Town and County minivan and a Ford Bronco sideswiped each other on the highway then they stopped at the off-ramp from I-65 North to State Road 160.
ISP Trooper Philip Hensley said both vehicles were "speeding up, slowing down and just not pulling over," and exchanging gestures while driving.
Both drivers got out of their vehicles, displayed handguns, then the driver of the Ford Bronco, identified as a woman later by police, fired multiple shots at the driver of the Chrysler, later identified as a man.
The man driving the van was struck and, along with a female passenger, fled the scene in the damaged vehicle. They stopped at a nearby gas station where first responders transported the injured man to UofL Hospital. He was treated and released.Â
"It's all preventable," Hensley said. "Simply put your emotions aside. Handle the situation. It's unpleasant regardless."
Hensley said the woman driving the Ford Bronco called 911 and dispatchers could hear the shooting taking place. The woman also said, "Yes, I fired shots."
"She stayed on 911 until our troopers arrived and was detained without incident," Hensley said.
Hensley said "all parties have been accounted for," and the case remains under investigation.
It happened on Interstate 65 near Henryville, Indiana.
Henryville schools were briefly placed on lockdown as the investigation started but was lifted shortly after.
At least four shots were fired in this incident, marking the second road rage shooting along this stretch of Interstate 65 in recent months. The previous incident was fatal.
As the holiday season ramps up and traffic increases, police are urging drivers to stay calm and avoid letting tempers flare on the road.
"The fact that you allow your emotions to overwhelm yourself, this is unnecessary," Hensley said.
