LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A southern Indiana attorney has been arrested on theft and tax evasion charges.
According to Indiana State Police, Jason Smith, 45, of Seymour, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant in Johnson County, about 23 miles south of Indianapolis.
ISP launched an investigation into Smith, who owns Smith Law Services and Floyd Harris Holdings, LLC., last year when it was reported he had not filed personal or business tax returns since 2018.
The investigation revealed Smith had deposited more than $2.5 million into his law firm business account and more than $1.3 million into another business account, ISP said in a release. Police said Smith did not pay any income taxes on those deposits, and he made personal purchases from those accounts.
In October 2024, ISP conducted a search of Smith's law office on North Chestnut Street in Seymour and his home, where police found a controlled substance.
Smith is charged with corrupt business influence, tax evasion, theft and possession of a controlled substance. He is being held in the Johnson County Jail, and is expected to be transferred to Jackson County to appear in court.
