NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A 26-year-old Clarksville woman has been arrested in connection to the murder of a man found dead in his New Albany home late Tuesday evening.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Carey Huls said police made contact with Tirzah Catherine Linson, of Clarksville, Ind., outside the Meijer off Allison Lane in Jeffersonville Tuesday night after receiving a call "in reference to a possible suicidal female."

After Jeffersonville Police officers spoke with the woman, Huls said it became clear officers needed to check on a home in New Albany. Jeffersonville Police then contacted the New Albany Police Department to conduct the welfare check at a home in the 800 block of East 11th Street around 8:15 p.m.

That's where police found a 68-year-old man — now identified as Gary D. Reid — dead inside. In a written statement, Huls said Reid died from an "apparent head injury."

Neighbors said they heard nothing, and said Reid was well known for his willingness to help anyone in need. Now they're wondering why anyone would hurt someone so willing to give to others.

"It's just crazy it happens to a guy that would literally give the shirt off his back if they needed it," said Brandon Schneider, who lives nearby. "If I was out here mowing my grass, he'd offer his leaf blower to me."

Schneider said he would also loan tools and help neighbors with other tasks.

After Reid's body was found, Indiana State Police detectives were called in to assist in the investigation. Linson was taken to Norton Clark Hospital in Jeffersonville for evaluation before being arrested and booked into the Floyd County jail. A booking photo for Linson was not immediately available.

It's not clear how Linson and Reid knew each other. The investigation is ongoing. Neighbors said he had a history of taking in people without a home and struggling with substance abuse to try and help them.

Police could not confirm if Reid was doing so in this case.

An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.
