LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — New signs are going up around the Silver Creek Dam in New Albany, Indiana.
On Monday, New Albany City Council approved the new signage where 14-year-old Andre "AJ" Edwards Jr. drowned on Memorial Day.
The signs are going to be placed near the public entrance to the dam area. During Monday's council meeting, some council members expressed concerns that the current signs are too wordy and that teens will likely not read it. The council is expected to spend up to $10,000 for the new signs.
The council also approved a resolution on Monday to take Silver Creek Dam down. The resolution, however, is non-binding and does not really have any baring.
The New Albany city engineer laid out a detailed presentation on how to keep the dam in place, adding a series of stone steps downstream that he said would preserve the flow of water and keep the area safe.
The removal of this dam is tied in court cases, and as WDRB was told, million of dollars has been spent in legal fees and designs. Several council members said it is time to take the dam out just to stop the mounting legal fees.
The debate to remove this dam reignited when 14-year-old Edwards slipped and fell off the dam on Memorial Day.
Edward's grandmother, Judy Clark, came prepared to the meeting with a list of questions to ask the council.
"One is, what is the real purpose of the of keeping the dam? Two, why are so many millions of tax payers dollars being spent on the dam?" Clark asked the council.
