LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Four people were cited by police Thursday after getting into an "altercation" outside an eighth grade promotion ceremony at a Louisville school.

Hollie Smith, the principal at the Academy @ Shawnee, said several adults began fighting in front of the school after the ceremony. Louisville Metro Police officers as well as Jefferson County Public Schools Police responded to deescalate the situation and move students and families out of the area.

Smith said in a letter to parents four people were cited, and none of them were Shawnee students.

"Unfortunately, this community issue came on to our school grounds today, interrupting a special day for our students," Smith wrote.
