LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Families have high hopes that Jefferson County Public Schools may restore some transportation for certain students and schools, but the district said nothing is official until the board approves a plan.
At Tuesday's board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said the district will look into restoring routes for free or reduced lunch students that attend Manual, Male and Butler high schools, all students that attend Johnson Traditional Middle School, and direct runs to Coleridge-Taylor and Young Elementary schools.
It would benefit Chrissi Collins' daughter. Collins works third shift, and ends her work day the same time her daughter starts school at Butler Traditional.
"That would be great because as of now, with my work schedule, I work 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Well school starts at 7:30 a.m.," Collins said.
The number of routes brought back is contingent on the number of TARC drivers that are certified and drive for JCPS.
"Our key is to see to make sure we have the 58 (TARC drivers) that pass that 'S' training, then we will bring back a recommendation for this transportation start time in the neighborhood of early September," Pollio said Tuesday.
On Wednesday, a JCPS spokesperson reiterated that the schools mentioned are not part of an official proposal or recommendation.Â
"If/when that time comes, there will be a proposal brought to the board for a vote," said Carolyn Callahan in a message to WDRB. "We recognize that our most economically disadvantaged magnet students will be most impacted by the transportation changes. So those are the students Dr. Pollio wants to help first, if possible."
While Collins' family may see transportation restored, she recognizes that it's not fair for other families.
"I think every child should be able to have transportation," she said. "I mean that's what tax dollars go for."Â Â
JCPS is expected to make a formal recommendation of a plan in the next seven to 10 days.
Pollio said restored routes would be up and running some time in September.Â
