LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Fourteen people were hospitalized after a Bullitt County Public Schools bus carrying 28 Lebanon Junction Elementary students crashed and overturned Monday afternoon.
In a letter sent to families, BCPS said the crash occurred a 4:45 p.m. on Wilson Creek Road.
The district said emergency services took the driver and eight students to area hospitals with injuries, and parents took an additional five injured students to local medical facilities.
A spokesperson for Norton Children's Hospital said they received seven patients and they all had minor injuries.
Cooper Brown, a fourth grader who was on the bus, walked away with a bandage over his right eye.
"I calmed one of my friends down — my new friend," Brown said.
Recalling the moments leading up to the crash, Brown said the driver appeared to be trying to "miss a car."
"The bus driver was kind of like trying to pull over and the wheel kind of broke," Brown said.
The Bullitt County Sheriff's Office is investigating what caused the crash.
Lebanon Junction Fire Chief Adam Heath said the response brought all available Bullitt County ambulances to the scene, along with additional EMS crews from Jefferson and Nelson counties.
"The safety of our students students and staff remains our highest priority," the district said. "We sincerely appreciate the Lebanon Junction community's support, patience and care for our students during this time."
