LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bullitt County Public Schools are receiving a $1 million grant to transform students' learning experiences.

The Center on Reinventing Public Education and the Walton Family Foundation developed the Innovative School Systems Grant to support school districts around the country.

The first phase of the grant provided 11 school systems with funding and resources to create a more individualized student experience.

According to CRPE, BCPS is "cultivating a district-wide professional learning culture rooted in student agency, problem-solving, and mastery learning, in alignment with its graduate profile."

The school district trained more than 100 teachers in core competencies and innovative teaching practices this year.

In the second phase, the district plans to expand on project-based learning, competency-based assessment and teacher professional development to 25 campuses.

BCPS has more than 13,000 students enrolled this year. That number is rising, and construction is underway to give those students more room.

Last year, the district started a $20 million project to build a new school addition between Bullitt East High School and the former Old Mill Elementary School.
