LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The family of a Jeffersonville High School student shown on video being placed in a headlock by a teacher claims the school never notified them about the incident.
The video surfaced last week, showing JHS photography teacher Casey Ritter placing a 16-year-old student in a headlock. Ritter claims the incident started after he caught the student vaping in a bathroom.
Attorney Kyle Beach said the teen's parents were never notified by the school about the incident, and the teen wasn't given medical attention on campus.
After school, Beach said, the student's mother took him to the ER where she said he was treated for head and neck injuries.
"We found that there would be no possible situation where it would be in accordance with the school policy and the training that you'd think they'd have in place to interact with students that it would be appropriate to grab a student by the hoodie, place them in a headlock, then throw them against a wall when you're walking them out of a bathroom of all places," Beach said.
Beach believes more video will eventually be released, including more footage from inside the stall.
Earlier this week Ritter's attorney, Larry Wilder, said he received an anonymous email with new footage showing what happened before the altercation that appears to have been recorded by the student involved.
“A picture is worth 1,000 words — well that video is worth 10,000 words,” Wilder said Tuesday. “And listen to the words of the young man and the venom and the hate that he spews at a school teacher.”
Wilder said Ritter was monitoring the hallway and bathroom that day, saw the student vaping in a stall, and smelled marijuana.
The student still hasn't returned to school as the family explores options for civil litigation, possibly against the school, Ritter or both.
The county prosecutor's office is reviewing the case, but Ritter has not been charged. Wilder said he advised Ritter to resign.
