LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools is planning to resign this week.

According to reporting from WKYT, the Fayette County Board of Education received a resignation notice Tuesday from Demetrus Liggins, who has served as the district's superintendent since 2021.

A special meeting of the school board will take place Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to address the resignation and announce plans for interim leadership.

"Throughout this transition, the Board's priority is maintaining stability across the district and ensuring students remain at the center of every decision," said FCPS spokesperson Miranda Scully in a statement to WKYT. "Fayette County Public Schools remains focused on supporting student success and ensuring a smooth and stable transition for students, staff and families."

The resignation comes as FCPS faces a large budget deficit, which has led to a series of layoffs and cuts, along with a loan being taken out to cover expenses.

Liggins did not respond to a request for comment.
