LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- July 1 is around the corner, meaning several new laws will go into effect across Indiana.
One of those new laws centers on requirements for school districts teaching on topics like human sexuality or sexually-transmitted infections, FOX 59 News reported Monday.
Senate Bill 442, titled "instruction on human sexuality," stipulates that a district must include instruction surrounding the topic of consent in sexual situations and deliver a presentation on human growth during pregnancy. It also focuses on school districts receiving consent from parents before certain materials could be added to sex education courses.Â
The bill prohibits school corporations from using curricular materials that have not been approved by the corporation's governing body to provide instruction on human sexuality. It also requires the governing body of school corporations to publish a list of materials used in these courses on the school's website and a link to that web page on consent forms.
The bill was a the center of a contentious debate in April after the Indiana House of Representatives added amendments once it passed the Indiana Senate. Those amendments included the addition of a requirement to include a video showing students a developing fetus and another highlighting the importance of consent.Â
SB 442 passed the Senate April 23 by a 35-12 vote, and was signed into law by Gov. Mike Braun May 6.
