LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools broke ground Tuesday on a new Kerrick Elementary, marking another step in the district’s long-term facilities plan.

The new $30 million school will be built on Upper Hunter’s Trace, just behind the existing 70-year-old building, which will be demolished once construction is complete. The new facility will span more than 80,000 square feet and is designed to improve safety, sustainability and energy efficiency.

“I am just sad they are making a new one because I do like the old one but by pictures of what they plan to make it look like I think it’d be a great school,” said Matthew McDonough, a fifth-grade Kerrick student.

The project is part of JCPS’ 10-year plan to build, renovate or rebuild 25 schools across the district. Officials said it addresses both the need for modernized learning environments and student safety.

“We didn’t even build any buildings in JCPS in the 1980s — we have inherited a portfolio of very old infrastructure,” said Rob Fulk, JCPS chief operating officer. “The research is pretty clear. If you’re in a modern school building … kids do better in an environment like that.”

JCPS Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood said the district views the financial investment as an investment in students’ futures.

“We are investing in their success and we don’t take that very lightly because when you invest, you expect excellence,” Yearwood said.

The new design will feature improved sightlines, natural lighting and larger classrooms. Parts of the trees removed from the site will be incorporated into the new building.

Students said they’re especially excited about new amenities.

“I kind of like how the playground is going to get an upgrade,” said Maria Sotell, a fourth-grade Kerrick student. “Our playground is a little bit small but it’s useful.”

The new Kerrick Elementary is expected to open in August 2027.
