LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Coaches and trainers at Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) have put some precautions into place to make sure student athletes stay safe during the July heat.

Coaches want athletes to hydrate and eat well before coming to practice.

There are cooling tubs, ice towels, access to water and shaded areas when working out outside.

If necessary, practices will be moved into the air-conditioned gyms or weight room or the length of the practice will be shortened.

Coaches are always looking for signs of heat illness.

"We're looking for clammy hands, and nausea, we're looking for kids who are confused, excessive sweating, and then we prepare for that by making sure that we can get them into an area where they can cool down," JCPS Executive Director of Athletics April Brooks said.

Coaches and athletic trainers will call an ambulance if they see any signs of heat illness.
