LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Jefferson County Board of Education held its  first meeting with new Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood Tuesday evening.

The main issue on the meeting's agenda was job vacancies across Jefferson County Public Schools.

A month before the start of the 2025-26 school year, JCPS has more than 400 positions to fill — 350 of which are teaching positions, mostly in middle schools.

Outgoing Superintendent Marty Pollio, who had held the role since 2017, said the staffing shortages would be the biggest issue JCPS would face in the years ahead.

Pollio retired July 1 after nearly three decades with the district, serving as superintendent for the last eight years. He has since taken on a new job as the 10th president of Ivy Tech Community College—Indiana's statewide community college system.

JCPS said there are some jobs that stay open all year.

The board is now requiring the administration to give a vacancy report every two months.

The district currently employs about 6,000 teachers.

This was the first board meeting for Yearwood. The new superintendent toured Auburndale Elementary School Monday to observe JCPS' Summer Success League Program in what was his first official school trip since taking over for Pollio.

The first day of school for JCPS students is Thursday, Aug. 7. Yearwood said he plans to be visible in schools and is enthusiastic about connecting with teachers and students.
