LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Students at Jefferson County Public Schools who left magnet schools this year due to a lack of JCPS-provided transportation can return to those schools next year.

The state's largest school district sent a letter to parents and guardians of students who are eligible to return to Coleridge-Taylor Elementary, Whitney Young Elementary, and Johnson Traditional Middle School, Butler Traditional High School, duPont Manual High School and Louisville Male High School.

Earlier this month, JCPS reinstated a total of 56 routes for around 1,000 magnet and traditional school students.

Last April, the Jefferson County Board of Education voted for a plan that cut transportation to all magnet and traditional schools, with the exception of Central and Western high schools, which both have a 75% threshold of students on free or reduced lunch.

Earlier this year, the JCPS Board of Education restored transportation for Male, Manual and Butler High School students on free or reduced lunch; all students at Johnson Traditional Middle School; all students at Coleridge Taylor and Young Elementary Schools.

That is because enough TARC drivers, who otherwise would have been laid off from the city transit system, received the proper certification to drive a school bus, in addition to their CDL.

Now, students can re-enroll in their previous magnet schools for the 2025-26 school year. The option is only available to students who left Butler, Coleridge-Taylor, Johnson, Male, Manual, or Young prior to the start of, or during, the 2024-25 school year because of a lack of JCPS transportation.

Parents have to let JCPS know by April 10 if their student plans to remain at their current school or return to their magnet school. JCPS said if parents don't share their child's intent by April, the student will remain at their currently enrolled school and will not have the option to re-enrolled in their previous magnet school for 2025-26.
