LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Some Jefferson County Public School students will get their transportation back before the end of the school year.

Tuesday evening, board members voted to restore transportation for students on free and reduced lunch at Butler, Manual, and Male. It would also restore transportation for all students at Coleridge-Taylor, Young Elementary School and Johnston Traditional Middle School.

The plan, announced in September, is to use TARC drivers to drive the JCPS buses, but the drivers needed proper certification to drive the school buses, which took several months to complete.

The district said it has nearly 70 former TARC drivers who are now licensed to drive the school buses, but needs more than 60 to restore these routes.

Nearly a dozen people spoke Tuesday night including students, parents and community leaders who all echoed similar concerns.

"There are families that do not have access to the transportation that is needed to get children to and from school let alone the time to," Love Eden, senior at duPont Manual High School, said. "It disheartens me to think how this decision was made without the consideration of students and student family voices."

This was the first vote for the new board members who were sworn in at the beginning of Tuesday's meeting.

Routes are expected to be restored by mid-March.
