LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Jefferson County Public Schools has started to surprise graduating seniors with scholarship money to go toward their college funds.

Dr. Brian Yearwood is helping give away approximately $70,000 in scholarship funds to eight students across the district. The funds are sponsored by the JCPS foundation, along with contributions from employees and community members.

The annual tradition began with former superintendent Marty Polio in 2019. 

Six of the eight students received their scholarship money on Friday, May 15 and Monday, May 18.

  • Ronik Sam, Fern Creek High School ($8,750)

Sam plans to attend the University of Kentucky to major in Political Science and Finance. She aims to pursue a career in diplomacy, law, and global leadership.

  • Hanan Ahmed, Central High School ($8,750)

Born in Adama, Ethiopia, Ahmed moved to the U.S. in 2014. A senior in Central’s Pre-Med Magnet Program, she plans to attend the University of Louisville to earn a degree in Public Health, with the long-term goal of becoming a pediatrician.

  • Heavenlei Ward, Central High School ($10,000)

Ward will attend Eastern Kentucky University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her goal is to build a career as an OBGYN or a labor and delivery nurse.

  • Sean Burklow, Ballard High School ($8,750)

Burklow will attend the University of Louisville to study Public Health. He aspires to become a Physician Assistant.

  • Daggan James, The Academy @ Shawnee ($10,000)

James plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University to study Aviation. His goal is to become a flight instructor and commercial airline pilot.

  • Taniya Johnson, The Academy @ Shawnee ($5,000)

Johnson will begin her university studies this fall in Exercise Science, with the goal of working professionally in athletics.

One of the remaining students received their scholarship on Wednesday, May 20. 

  • Lyric Todd-Rodriguez, Male High School (more than $8,700)

Todd-Rodriguez plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University, majoring in Criminal Justice.
