LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some Jefferson County Public Schools teachers walked in to school together Wednesday instead of walking out in protest.
Teachers joined a "National Walk-In" before school Wednesday morning. They demonstrated to show support for federal funding for public schools.
The teachers said JCPS relies on federal funding to cover about 19% of its budget, which helps to feed, transport, educate and clothe students.
"We want to see our schools protect," said Karrie De Torres, a JCPS teacher. "We want to see them funded. We want to see that our kids get the provisions that they need."
The walk-in was part of a nationwide Day of Action led by the National Education Association. It's in response to the White House's cuts to the Department of Education.
The teachers said staff and students, especially disabled and low-income students will be directly impacted by the loss of federal funding.
