LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some Kentucky lawmakers want voters to decide if school choice should be allowed in the state.

House Bill 208 would put a question on the ballot asking for a constitutional amendment about school choice.

The goal would be to remove constitutional hurdles for school choice initiatives.

Republican lawmakers want qualifying families to receive vouchers, or a credit, to attend alternative schools, like private schools.

It comes after school choice advocates suffered setbacks in courts.

Opponents argue it takes funding from public schools. The general assembly passed a bill related to school choice in 2021, and lawsuits followed. A judge ruled it was unconstitutional.

A state judge last month struck down a law aimed at setting up a funding method for charter schools. In 2022, Kentucky’s Supreme Court struck down another law meant to award tax credits for donations supporting private school tuition.
