LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A high-profile Jefferson County Public Schools teacher said he was kept out of the classroom for three months for breaking up a fight.

Kumar Rashad was named the Kentucky Department of Education's 2024 Teacher of the Year in September. But a month later, he was reassigned from his job as a math teacher at Breckinridge Metro High School to "non-instructional duties" at the Special Needs East Bus Compound.

JCPS wouldn't say why Rashad was reassigned. But Thursday, he gave his side of the story.

"I saw two males attack a female, and I went to the female's rescue, and I removed the two students off of that female. The two students said I removed them too harshly," Rashad said during a news conference he held. "This shines a light on problems in the district, for one, there are many educators reassigned for frivolous reasons."

He said the investigation is now over, and he's been cleared to return to the classroom, which JCPS has since confirmed. Rashad said teachers need protection against frivolous allegations, and investigations need to happen more swiftly.

He said he'll be back to teaching on Friday.

Rashad also briefly served as a Louisville Metro Council member, representing District 3.
