LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The community is showing its support for the 12-year-old brutally attacked on a Jefferson County Public Schools bus.
A video captured a student punching and kicking Kionni Davis. The video was taken onboard a school bus leaving Kammerer Middle School on Friday.
Kionni said it started with a verbal assault in school and escalated into the violent attack. While the attack is under investigation, the community has showed its support for the middle school student.
"It's amazing for them to reach out to us like this," said Kionni, in response to the Real Young Prodigys throwing him a surprise birthday party.
The Real Young Prodigys is a youth hip-hop group, with a mission to create a positive outlet and path to success for young people.
"I just want him to have a good day," said Kionni's mother, Whitney Davis, before the surprise birthday was revealed.
Kionni will be 13 at the end of the month. To celebrate, the group had cupcakes, ice cream and birthday gifts waiting for him.
The group also sang "Happy Birthday" to him, and his younger sister who also has a birthday coming up.
"We stand in solidarity with Kionni Davis and his family as they seek justice, along with the physical and emotional healing," said Love Eden, a member of the Real Young Prodigys.
A representative from UofL Athletics also came with gifts, and an invitation to attend any UofL football game this season.
"We'll make sure you have a good time," said the UofL representative.
The love and support is something Whitney Davis never expected.
"We've never been part of a church or had anyone but us. It's always just been us, I didn't know what to do ... So I really, really, thank you guys," she said.
It's also left an impact on the one person it is all meant for, Kionni.
"It feels amazing to have a community that will stand by you," he said.
