LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A student at Jefferson County Public Schools and an adult were shot after a fight broke out on a school bus Wednesday around 4:30 pm.

Eastern High School freshman Ciyana Carter had nearly made it home from school when the shooting happened.

"I won't really say it's not safe, because, you know, there's a lot of fights breaking out: weapons coming to school and just a lot in general," Ciyana said.

Video sent to WDRB shows a large group of people on 24th Street, yelling. Teens and adults then shift toward a sidewalk where the fighting intensifies.

"It's kind of crazy," Ciyana said. "But at the same time, you really think about our high school is just kind of like that. It's just always drama going around, someone's always fighting so it gets kind of normal at one point."

One woman's shirt is pulled off, another person hits someone else with a shoe.

Video shows another woman holding a brick.

Then, another gets chased with what appears to be a long stick or piece of wood.

"I don't know, like, it escalated very quickly, and it really shouldn't have been all that," Ciyana said.

That's when someone pulled a gun. The video recorded three gunshots.

"Afterwards, when the shooting started happening, everybody, like, ran home and stuff like that and tried to get away," Ciyana said.

One JCPS student and one adult were shot. They are now recovering at UofL Hospital.

For Ciyana's dad, Melvin Carter, violent acts like this are happening far too often near his daughter.

"Some of these parents need to pay more attention to the kids," he said. "Before they let them out the door and let them go do something else."

Earlier this week, a student pulled out a steak knife during a fight at Eastern High School.

"It's crazy," Melvin said. "It's sad too."

And not too far away, two adults got on a JCPS bus and a student pepper-sprayed another student.

"It's got just something to do with people being scared at school," Melvin said. "I think they just need to talk more to their peers, more than just take it into their own hands."

Ciyana missed school Thursday for a doctor appointment.

"I kind of wanted to go to school to, you know, see what was going on," she said. "But at the same time, I didn't."

She said nowadays, she feels safer at home.

"It's better to think that we're getting metal detectors and stuff, so, like, incidents like this won't happen as much," she said.

Melvin says he would drive them to school, but it's too far and takes to much time to take them across town everyday to Eastern High School.

Eastern High School's principal released a statement on Thursday saying they will have officers at the bus stop during bus stop hours and at Eastern High School for the rest of the week to monitor the area.

WDRB reached out to LMPD to confirm identities and who shot who. WDRB also requested the body camera footage of the aftermath. WDRB is still waiting for the information.

JCPS disagrees with LMPD’s initial statement and says video from the bus does not show an altercation on Wednesday. The district also says 24th and Magazine, where the shooting occurred, is not a JCPS bus stop.
