LOUISVILLE, Ky, (WDRB) -- Nearly 300 students at Portland Elementary School spent part of their day focusing on healthy smiles.

Kindergarten through fifth grade students participated Monday in a teeth-brushing exercise aimed at teaching the importance of proper dental care.

The event was supported by UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Kentucky, which donated its time, supplies and expertise. Students practiced brushing while learning about oral hygiene and proper cleaning techniques as part of February's Children's Dental Health Month.

Health officials said lessons like these are especially important in Kentucky. According to America's Health Rankings, only six out of 10 Kentucky adults report visiting a dentist each year.

School leaders said the hands-on approach helps students better understand the daily routines needed to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
