LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) school is making headway on a brand new inclusive playground.

Stopher Elementary School held a ribbon cutting Friday for phase 1 of a playground meant to accommodate students of all abilities.

So far, more than $100,000 has been used to purchase sensory-friendly equipment, a ramp and rubberized foundation for wheelchairs.

"We have created a new space with some enhancements over here for kids in wheelchairs to all play together and have access," Stopher Elementary Principal Melissa Shearon said. "The new equipment really enhances and encourages sensory play. Sensory play is really good for kids. It increases curiosity, it strengthens inclusion, it helps them be artistic."

The project has taken two years and they are working on more additions like a ADA compliant sidewalk.
