LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — More Kentucky children are ending up in emergency rooms after accidentally consuming marijuana products that look like candy or snacks, experts told state lawmakers this week.

The Child Fatality and Near Fatality External Review Panel reported a sharp increase in fatal and near-fatal poisonings involving cannabinoids since 2020.

Doctors said many of the cases involve gummies or edibles that are brightly colored and appealing to young children.

Some lawmakers worry the problem could worsen once medical cannabis dispensaries begin operating in the state.

"As the use of medical cannabis starts, we’re going to see these numbers go up," said Sen. Danny Carroll.

Officials with the Kentucky Medical Marijuana Program said dispensary products must follow strict rules for child-resistant packaging and warning labels to prevent accidental ingestion.
