LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville anti-violence advocate who was the victim of a recent assault is leading a grassroots effort to cut down on crime.

Retired Louisville Metro Police officer Ray Barker, known as Sir Friendly C, was assaulted last week while working at the Dollar Tree at 28th and Broadway.

Since the attack, Barker has received an outpouring of support from the community and was inspired to start the "Good Samaritan Project." The goal is to connect neighbors across the city, start having conversations and change the culture of violence.

"We've asked the city for help. They can't do it. The police can't do it. But neighbors helping neighbors, we can do it," he said. "If everyone shows each other the same love that (they) have shown me over the past week, I guarantee the culture of violence will go down in the city of Louisville."

Project leaders said personal accountability and responsibility are a big part of the initiative, and believe changing the culture of violence begins at home.
