LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Louisville man was convicted Friday of killing a man in the city's Shelby Park neighborhood on New Year's Day 2023.
A jury found Lloyd Mason guilty of murder on May 15 and recommended he serve 50 years in prison.
Mason was 19 years old when he was arrested in February 2023 for the murder of 24-year-old Dorion Tisby.
According to Louisville Metro Police, Tisby was found shot on East Oak Street, near South Preston Street, on Jan. 1, 2023, shortly before midnight. He was taken to UofL Hospital, where he later died.
Mason was arrested shortly after the shooting after speeding through a stop sign and crashing into an LMPD cruiser before fleeing on foot, according to an arrest citation. Police said he didn't have a valid driver's license and was driving a stolen vehicle.
When questioned about why he ran, he allegedly told officers that he was both intoxicated and scared.
He was initially arrested for disregarding a stop sign, driving without a license, two counts of wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police on foot, resisting arrest and receipt of stolen property. Police said Mason and an unidentified accomplice were responsible for the shooting.
According to court records, he was released from jail on his on recognizance on Jan. 3, 2023.
Mason wasn't arrested and charged with Tisby's murder until Feb. 8. According to court documents, police found several firearms inside the stolen vehicle that matched shell casings found at the scene.
"Gun violence continues to plague our streets, but we will combat it at every turn," Commonwealth's Attorney Gerina D. Whethers said in a news release Tuesday afternoon. "With a recommended sentence for this defendant on half a century behind bars, the jury has sent a clear message that our community will not stand for these unlawful shootings."
Mason isn't eligible for probation or shock probation. He must serve 20 years of his sentence before he would be eligible to take his case to the parole board.
A judge will have the final say on Mason's sentence during a hearing on June 25 in Jefferson Circuit Court.
