LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A special group of kids in Louisville is learning what it takes to save a life.
Getting into the Olympics takes practice, but getting your kids interested in becoming a nurse, doctor or medical professional takes dedication from both the parent and student. Christopher 2X's Game Changers organization is trying to turn the tide with the Hospital Olympics.
"And it sharpens their skill sets in regards to how they can use their hands, their eyes, their brain, by being connected to these different tasks, which is a wonderful exercise as it relates to, what we do with future health," Christopher 2X, Game Changers creator and anti-violence activist, said.
Saturday morning, the UofL Medical Center's auditorium was filled with the next generation of doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health care professionals, all part of the Future Healers program. But before they start stitching you up, they have to practice.
The Future Healers were given all of the tools they need to learn skills like how to give an injection and how to stitch up a realistic wound.
“But equally important, some educational, fun and learning pieces about how they can utilize this outside the hospital. Like stop the bleed for those kind of injuries and things like that. And equally at the same time, trying to make them aware about health awareness. It's a part of the inner woven fabric of the surgery Olympics that we ask the kids to engage in,” Christopher 2X said.
Christopher 2X helped start the Future Healers program four years ago, along with UofL's School of Medicine, Department of Surgery and Trauma teams. The program was created by medical students wanting to make a difference by engaging with children who have been impacted by gun violence in some way.
“Everybody's pitching in to try to impact these kids. And that's what's so meaningful to them and their parents,” Christopher 2X said.
