LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — After closing more than one year ago to begin construction, the transformation of Louisville's Portland Library is starting to take shape.
The multimillion-dollar upgrade is the first time in more than 100 years this library has received a significant expansion or renovation.
"This is going to create a modern, world-class library for this community," said Lee Burchfield, director of Louisville Free Public Library.
The Portland library branch first opened in 1913. It's set to reopen in the summer of 2025 after this current construction wraps.
"This is going to completely transform the experience of using the public library for everybody in Portland," said Burchfield.
On the outside, there's a new addition around 5,000 square feet that will create a space for kids and teens to read and an area for more computers.
Inside the existing building, there's space for offices and public meetings. An elevator will be added for better accessibility, and there's room for new book collections. There will also be a space for science and technology equipment, which could include things like a laser cutter or 3D printer.
All the construction is happening while keeping pieces of history and maintaining the original structure.
"Part of what I'm so excited about is the beautiful way they have found to connect, architecturally, that old building to that new building," Burchfield said.
He said there is enough funding for the project, which is around $7 million.
There are four projects the Louisville Free Public Library is working on right now, totaling more than $40 million.
"We are still looking for some additional money because we don't just want to build them, we want to make them the best that they can be," said Burchfield.
The Parkland and Fern Creek libraries are also set to open in 2025.
