LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear honored the fifth anniversary of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic during a ceremony at the state capital Thursday.
Kentucky Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack joined the governor to recognize the impact of the illness.
The ceremony included bell ringing, as Beshear suggested in the early days of the pandemic. It also included remarks, prayers and a vocal performance.
Beshear remembered the moment he got the call about the state's first case of the virus.
"I'd gotten home, I planned to spend time with Will, and Lila, and Britainy, and that's when I got the call that we had our first case," he said. "It changed everything. In a matter of hours, we were fully immersed in the battle of our lifetime."
Since the start of the pandemic, COVID-19 killed more than 20,000 people across Kentucky.
