LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Churchill Downs is adding a Grandstand Terrace that is expected to add nearly 2,400 new seats on the second and third floors. The Terrace will also feature expanded wagering windows, food and beverage offerings, and restrooms. It will also add a Rooftop Garden, which will be a hospitality lounge area for VIP guests.
The Terrace is expected to be ready for next year's Oaks and Derby. The new seats will overlook the Derby's starting gate at the head of the homestretch.
"The Grandstand Terrace and Rooftop Garden offer a rare opportunity to create new seating for the Kentucky Derby and Oaks," said Kevin Flanery, president of Churchill Downs Racetrack. He said a survey of Grandstand patrons during the 2013 Derby and Oaks indicated that improved and expanded concessions, wagering, and restroom facilities were at the top of their list of recommendations.
The additional seats will bring Churchill Downs' overall seating capacity to 55,638 seats for Derby and Oaks.
