GRC Bell Tower in Clarksville in Colgate Park - 5.9.25

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A historic piece of Clarksville history has been relocated to its permanent home.Ā

The old George Rogers Clark Bell Tower that once adorned the top of George Rogers Clark Elementary School,Ā built in 1899, has been moved to Colgate Park at the "Y" intersection of South Clark Boulevard and Sherwood Avenue near the Ohio River.

The town plans to restore the bell tower now that it has been relocated. The town said in a social media post Friday that crews are bricking the base of the new landmark along Heritage Trail.

This is all part of the Clarksville Historic Preservation Commission's Save the Bell Tower project. The bell tower was removed in 1973 when GRC school closed. The tower remained at the site of the old elementary school, but the bell was relocated to Clarksville High School.Ā

The Clarksville Historic Preservation Commission and the town of Clarksville asked for public input and proposals on where to relocate the bell tower in 2023.

WDRB reported in February 2023 the expected budget for the Save the Bell Tower project was $50,000, including a $30,000 grant from Southern Indiana Arts Alliance.
