LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Instead of relaxing on a beach, dozens of students from Howard University are spending their spring break mentoring children in Louisville.

The students are volunteering this week with The Cabbage Patch Settlement House as part of the Howard University Alternative Spring Break program.

Fifty-two students are in Louisville March 9–13, with about 15 volunteering each afternoon at The Cabbage Patch 3–6 p.m., helping children with homework, tutoring and activities.

"The Cabbage Patch is all about showing our children and youth all the possibilities out there and giving them role models as examples to follow in life," Brandi Giles, The Cabbage Patch director of programs, said in a release.

"We are excited to host Howard University students not only because they will volunteer and help support our programs, but also because it’s an opportunity for our kids to see what they can do when they get older," said Corey Miller, executive director.
