LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Interstate 64 West reopened before noon Wednesday after it was closed for several hours following a fire under the interstate.Â
Louisville Division of Fire Capt. Donovan Sims said the call came in around 4:50 a.m. Wednesday at 16th Street and Northwestern Parkway. The fire was next to I-64.Â
Firefighters arrived within minutes and saw heavy flames under the expressway from a vacant, one-story building.
LFD advised the city to shut down I-64 between the 9th Street and 22nd Street exits for safety. Initially, all lanes both directions were closed, but eastbound lanes reopened by 7 a.m.Â
Extra equipment was called in to help control the blaze. It took 45 firefighters approximately one hour to control the fire.Â
Once the fire was out, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet brought in state inspectors to check for any possible damage from the intense flames, and the interstate was allowed to reopen before noon.Â
KYTC bridge inspectors are on site and assessing the I-64 West bridge near mile marker 3.4, following a nearby building fire. This portion of I-64 West is anticipated to be closed for several hours and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route. https://t.co/nAj6pXSZit

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
Sims said the department had battled a fire at the same location around Kentucky Derby time in May 2022.Â
