LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An improvement project on West Kentucky Street near Simmons College of Kentucky is now complete.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the project's completion during his weekly news briefing Tuesday morning.
The stretch of road has been reimagined to make it safer, easier to navigate and more connected for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. It also serves as a link between the city's California neighborhood and Old Louisville.
"This is what's possible when we listen to our residents, when we listen to our organizations in our community, and we make investments in our neighborhoods," Greenberg said. "And I'm proud that we did here, and we're going to keep investing."
Crews also converted West Kentucky Street for two-way traffic between Fifth and Eighth streets, expanding the two-way portion of the road from 15th to Fifth streets. New trees, crosswalks, sidewalks and curbs were also added.
In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Simmons College of Kentucky President Dr. Kevin Cosby called the work "more than an infrastructure project; it is a statement of progress and inclusion."
"This project will increase access, safety, walkability, and strengthen the connection between Simmons College of Kentucky and the community," Cosby said. "These enhancements will make our campus more accessible to students, families, and visitors from across the city and the nation. This corridor now reflects the vitality and growth taking place at Simmons and throughout this historic neighborhood."Â
The project, announced in March, was intended to make the corridor more pedestrian-friendly, improve its appearance, traffic flow and safety. At the time of the project's announcement, city leaders said more than $1 million would be invested in it.
