LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Food stamp users in Indiana can no longer buy soft drinks or candy with their benefits.
Brooke Rollins, secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, signed Indiana's waiver Friday banning sugary soft drinks and candy from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Soda is the No.1 item purchased with Indiana SNAP benefits.
“More taxpayer-funded SNAP dollars are spent on sugary drinks and candy than on fruits and vegetables," Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said in a news release. "Indiana is proud to lead the way in the Make America Healthy Again agenda by making this common sense move to return the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to its intended purpose: nutrition.”
Indiana was one of the first states to remove soft drinks and candy from SNAP benefits. In April, Braun signed the executive order banning the purchase of soft drinks and candy from SNAP. He also signed eight other executive orders to "make Indiana healthy again."
