LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Indiana teens will soon be able to get their driver’s license at age 16 under a new state law signed by Gov. Mike Braun.

The change removes a previous requirement that 16-year-olds wait an additional 90 days after their birthday before becoming eligible to drive.

Gov. Braun signed the measure as part of House Enrolled Act 1200, calling it a "commonsense" update aimed at giving families more flexibility, according to Fox 59.

While the age requirement is changing, officials said all other licensing rules remain in place. Teens will still need to complete driver’s education, hold a learner’s permit for at least 180 days, pass written and vision tests and complete supervised driving hours before taking a road test.

The law also allows eligible 16-year-olds to obtain a motorcycle endorsement once requirements are met.

Supporters said the change could help families in rural and suburban areas where driving is often essential for school, work and daily transportation.

The new law takes effect July 1, 2026.
