LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A 21-year-old inmate was found unresponsive early Thursday morning at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

According to LMDC, officers discovered the Hispanic male inmate around 4:24 a.m. while serving breakfast inside the facility. The man had been in custody since Feb. 14.

Emergency medical personnel were called, but the inmate was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

An internal investigation is underway by the LMDC Professional Standards Unit. The Louisville Metro Police Department Public Integrity Unit has also been notified and will investigate the death, which is standard procedure in cases involving in-custody deaths.

LMDC Chief Jerry Collins offered condolences in a statement.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young man," Collins said. "We are fully investigating the incident to determine the facts of this unfortunate event."
