LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Fifth graders at two different Jefferson County Public Schools graduated from a special program to help keep them on the right path.

Maupin and Fern Creek Elementary schools held graduation ceremonies Wednesday for students in the GREAT program.

GREAT stands for Gang Resistance Education and Training. The 6-week program is led by Louisville Metro Police officers and teaches students how to avoid conflict and stay away from gangs and bullying.

"We're very proud of all of these students and the work that they've done and we know that they are going to take the skills that they learned during the great program and push them forward not only here at school but out into the community as well because these skills are things that they can utilize in multiple places," Allyson Vitato, Maupin Elementary School principal said.

The students were also given certificates for completing the program.
