JCPS transportation proposal to come next month, early March according to chairperson

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The newly-appointed JCPS board chair said to expect proposals about bus transportation for next year, late next month or early March.

That is what board chairman Corrie Shull shared with reporters after Tuesday's board meeting.

"I'm reserving comment until we have an official proposal given to us. We're sort of considering several proposals at the moment so those proposals are going through the reap and want to make sure they're equitable, we want to make sure that we are not excluding our most vulnerable students and so hopefully we'll know more from district officials in the coming weeks," Shull said. "Hopefully next month, late February or early March."

In Dec. 2023, JCPS sent a letter to families that said the only transportation it can guarantee for the 2024-25 school year is for "special education students and students attending their resides school."

JCPS said students have a "resides school" determined by which zone they live in, which can be found through the district's School Finder.

The board has previously reviewed a slew of possible changes ahead of next school year, brought forward by the districts. Options ranging from cutting 15 to more than 100 buses by:

Eliminating all bus transportation for magnet and traditional schools, only transporting free and reduced lunch students to those schools
Creating a hub for magnet and traditional school students
Creating a lottery for available seats leftover on buses
Eliminate "grandfathering" for prior student assignment plan
Offering a parent stipend for high school student transportation

This school year, JCPS went from two to nine start times across the district, and consolidated bus routes to deal with driver shortages.

The board's next meeting is Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at Van Hoose Education Center on Newburg Road.
