LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentuckians are being advised to avoid visiting county clerk offices for motor vehicle services in early January, according to state officials.

Vehicle owners are encouraged to renew their registrations early this year because online vehicle registration will be unavailable starting Dec. 28. According to a news release, the state is modernizing its vehicle information database with a new, customer-centric system.

All county clerk offices plan to temporarily pause in-person and online motor and vessel-related services in early January to accommodate the transition. The suspension of services starts Jan. 1, 2024, and will last between four to 10 business days.

"This launch represents the culmination of years of behind-the-scenes work to modernize our robust system to better serve Kentuckians," Department of Vehicle Regulation Commissioner Matt Cole said in a news release. "KAVIS will streamline processes, improve customer service and enhance overall efficiency."

The AVIS system has been active since 1976. Customers can't bring in work for 2024 in advance this year.
