LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Kentucky lawmaker wants to create a yearly sales tax holiday to give families a break as they prepare for the new school year.

Rep. Beverly Chester-Burton, D-Jefferson County, filed House Bill 175 in the Kentucky House of Representatives earlier this week. The bill would eliminate the state sales tax "on many clothing and personal items" on the first Friday of August until midnight the following Sunday. The first tax holiday would be from Aug. 7 to Aug. 9, 2026.

It would apply to most clothing items, up to $200 and other specific items under $3,000.

Chester-Burton said the goal is to lower costs and make life easier during the school year.
