LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Blood supply in Kentucky is low, and the Kentucky Blood Center is asking people to donate.
All blood types are needed, but KBC has especially low inventory of A negative and O negative blood. On Thursday, KBC said in a release that it has less than a half day of blood products to supply the more than 70 hospitals in Kentucky it services.
KBC reports there is only a day's supply of O negative, which is the universal blood type used in emergency situations when a patient's blood type is unknown.
The recent Thanksgiving holiday, increased transfusions in local hospital and the winter weather has put a strain on the current supply. KBC said reserves collected during Big Blue Crush two weeks ago has already been used.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and in good health, provide a photo ID and meet additional requirements.
To schedule an appointment at either KBC locations in Louisville, Middletown at 14002 Shelbyville Road or Hillview at 5406 Antle Drive, click here. Both locations are open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All donors will receive a two-pack of KBC socks.
