LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Runners participating in the 2021 Kentucky Derby Festival's Marathon and MiniMarathon can choose to run the race virtually or on a modified course with limited capacity, organizers announced Friday.Â
KDF organizers were forced to cancel the 2020 Marathon and MiniMarathon that were scheduled to run in August due to the coronavirus pandemic.Â
Half marathon runners who choose to cross the finish line in person will do so over four days, between April 22 and April 25. Marathon runners can also choose to tackle a modified in-person course on Saturday, April 24.Â
The starting time slots will also be staggered throughout each race day to allow for social distancing.Â
Runners can also choose to run either race virtually between April 22 and May 22.Â
"While we know this will not be the race through Louisville that has become a tradition for so many, our goal is to still provide the same Derby Festival spirit and race experience we've missed this year," KDF organizers said in an email.Â
Any runners who deferred the 2020 race have until Jan. 15 to decide which option they would prefer to do in 2021.Â
