LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A major milestone was reached Friday in the expansion of the Kentucky Exposition Center.

State and local leaders gathered in the North Wing Lobby for a topping off ceremony, a construction tradition recognizing the placement of one of the final structural beams on a new building.

Following the program, attendees walked through Freedom Hall to the construction site, where guests signed a beam before it was lifted into place.

The new 350,000-square-foot building is designed to host a wide range of events, including livestock competitions, equine shows, sports tournaments, trade shows and conventions. Kentucky Venues previously shared renderings of the project, which carries a $180 million price tag. The facility is expected to be completed next year.

Officials said the building marks the first phase of a broader expansion and renovation plan designed to boost the exposition center’s role as a major driver of tourism and large-scale events in Louisville.

Once construction is finished, the West Wing, West Hall and Pavilion are scheduled for upgrades.
