LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- After six months, a $1 million Powerball ticket purchased in Henry County, Kentucky, has expired without the winner stepping up to claim it.
In a news release, the Kentucky Lottery said the unclaimed ticket was sold at the Pilot Travel Center in Pendleton, which is just off Interstate 71 north of Louisville.
The ticket was sold on July 19, 2023, when the Powerball jackpot was an estimated $1 billion. The winner had 180 days from the drawing to claim the prize before it expired Jan. 15.
Lottery officials said that while the ticket officially expired Monday, the winner actually would have had to take the ticket to the Lottery's headquarters in downtown Louisville on Friday, Jan. 12, because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.
The Kentucky Lottery said it will now transfer the winnings to Kentucky's Unclaimed Prize Fund, designated by lawmakers to provide support to the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship (KEES).
"Unfortunately, the ticket was never claimed, but there is a silver lining at the end of the day — we will be returning $1 million to education to further our mission to fund college scholarships and grants for Kentucky students and their families," Kentucky Lottery President Mary Harville said in a news release on Monday.
The owner of the unclaimed ticket matched the first five white balls – 7-10-11-13-24 – but didn't match the Powerball 24. That earned them the secondary prize of $1 million.
