LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — As Labor Day weekend approaches, Kentucky officials are urging everyone to celebrate the end of summer responsibly.
The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration along with law enforcement agencies nationwide in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
It started Wednesday, Aug. 13 and runs through Sept. 1.
The goal is to reduce impaired driving crashes, which often increase during holiday weekends.
Last year in Kentucky, there were a total of 4,260 crashes involving an impaired driver, resulting in 2,062 injuries and 185 deaths, KOHS said in a release. During Labor Day weekend in 2024, there were 76 crashes involving an impaired driver with 44 injuries and one death.
KOHS offers some tips to have a safe, holiday weekend:
- Plan for a sober, designated driver if alcohol is part of your festivities
- Report if you see an impaired driver by pulling over and calling 911
- Wear your seat belt
