JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A man was arrested after a four-hour standoff Friday that began with police finding a headless body in a Jeffersonville home.

Early Friday afternoon, a post on the Jeffersonville Police Department Facebook page warned the public to avoid the area due to a "tactical situation in the 3000 block Callaway Drive" off Charlestown Pike.

Around 9:56 a.m., police responded to the 1700 block of Summerlin Place on a welfare check, not far from Callaway Drive, on a homicide investigation. One person was killed at the scene on Summerlin, police said, and an armed person of interest was located on Callaway. However, that person, later identified by Jeffersonville police as Bryce Winnecke, went inside a home on Callaway, leading to a four-hour standoff with police.

Winnecke ultimately came outside and was arrested without incident. WDRB drone images captured Winnecke in handcuffs Friday afternoon. He is being held at the Clark County Jail, charged with murder.

In an update about 9:20 p.m. Friday, Jeffersonville Police Capt. Sam Moss confirmed to WDRB police found a headless body at the crime scene on Summerlin Place. Moss also said a severed head was found at the crime scene on Callaway Drive.

Police said this was an isolated incident within a family that wasn't random.

"There is no risk to the community right now," Moss said.

Police haven't said what the relationship between the victim and Winnecke is.

Later Friday night, police obtained search warrants, and were seen at the home on Callaway Drive collecting evidence.

As daylight faded, a car was hauled away by detectives while shaken neighbors called the scene both heartbreaking and terrifying.

Community reaction

Doug Whitworth, who lives near the home on Summerlin Place, said his driveway camera captured a group of people related to the victim gathered on the driveway of the home Friday.

"Ladies crying out there and hugging out there," Whitworth said. "The crime scene unit was parked right out there."

Whitworth also said the crime scene unit took pictures of one of the woman's shoes.

Another neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said he saw Winnecke outside frequently.

"He always waves and stuff when I see him. Seems like a nice person so expecting that, did not expect at all."

Neighbors of the Callaway Drive home are shook up as they said it is generally a quiet area, adding the family who lives in the home is friendly and generally kept to themselves. Neighbors also said they had to stay in their homes from about 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until police allowed them to leave.

"Just kind of like a mouth dropping situation. Like I said, I have known him for 8 years so knowing them, knowing who he is, knowing how their family operates, they're a very family-oriented family."
