Exposed wires on an interstate light pole caused by copper thieves - 3.22.24

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The State of Kentucky is launching a new pilot program to try and stop copper wire thefts from highway lighting.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will launch its new pilot solar lighting program in Jefferson County next week, according to a new release.

The project, funded by a $200,000 federal grant, will replace traditional wired lighting systems with solar-powered options, eliminating copper wiring.

The new solar-powered lighting will be installed at four interstate ramp locations. In order to install the new lighting, daily ramp closures will happen on Interstate 64 and Interstate 264 starting Monday, Sept. 9.

Ramp Closures:

  • I-64 West on-ramp from Northwestern Pkwy. closed on Monday, Sept. 9 - Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • I-64 East off-ramp at Exit 3 to 22nd Street closed on Monday, Sept. 9 - Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • I-264 West on-ramp from Bank Street closed on Wed., Sept. 10 - Thursday, Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • I-264 East off-ramp at Exit 1 to Bank Street closed on Wed., Sept. 10 - Thursday, Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Motorists should follow the signed detour route and are advised to use caution and expect delays traveling through the work zone.

KYTC said since 2020, copper wire thefts have caused almost $1 million in damages, and about 1,400 lights rendered inoperable due to the thefts. Local and state law enforcement officials continue to urge the public to report suspicious activity.
