LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- All lanes are back open on Interstate 65 South in downtown Louisville roughly 10 hours after falling concrete created a hole in the road, leading to lane closures on Wednesday.

There were also lane closures below the interstate on Brook Street.

According to a LensAlert sent from Louisville Metro Emergency Management about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, I-65 south at hospital curve would be down to one lane until further notice. Concrete from the bridge deck was observed in pieces on city streets below.

Drivers were being asked to avoid the left two lanes of I-65 southbound just past the Jefferson Street exit. It said "crews will be working on the interstate until further notice." The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a news release that two lanes would remain closed while crews repaired a "pothole," with work expected to be done Wednesday.

KYTC said crews spent the afternoon removing concrete from the area before placing "high-strength concrete" to fill the space. They also repaired two other places on the bridge that had minor concrete breaks.

Louisville Metro Police also blocked the right two lanes of Brook Street beneath the raised interstate.

Back in February 2023, two lanes of I-65 south near hospital curve closed over Muhammad Ali Boulevard downtown. Images from TRIMARC cameras showed several large potholes in that area. And again last November, two-lanes were shut down as repairs were made to expansion joints.

This week, drivers on I-65 south are already dealing with restrictions on the Kennedy Bridge. Three lanes on the bridge will be closed indefinitely to repair a long plagued faulty joint that connects sections of roadway.
